Montenegro visa requirements for US passport holders

Last verified

Count previous Montenegro visits before booking, and arrange your stay registration after arrival. Your short tourist exemption is separate from any permission needed for neighboring countries.

Entry rule for your passport

No visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Register your stay within 24 hours of arrival; hotels usually handle registration.

Official sources: U.S. Department of State.

Who this covers: Ordinary US passports for short tourism. Emergency, official and other documents, employment and residence need separate checks.

Check your circumstances

Read these conditions alongside the entry rule. Where official guidance does not state a condition, that is not confirmation that no condition applies.

Passport type Conditions to check
This guide is limited to an ordinary US tourist passport. Other travel documents must be checked separately.

Official sources: U.S. Department of State.

Other visas or residence permits Not stated in the cited guidance
No supporting third-country visa requirement is verified for this named-passport exemption. Rules for other nationalities or documents must not be inferred from it.

Carrier and arrival route Conditions to check
Check the entry rules for your full route. Sea arrivals use designated ports; land crossings can close at short notice.

Stay and visa validity Confirmed for this scope
The checked US tourist rule is up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Previous visits count; this is not a new allowance at every entry.

Count earlier visits before you book

The tourist allowance is up to 90 days in any 180-day period. A brief trip out of Montenegro does not give you an automatic fresh 90 days. Keep a record of arrival and departure dates when planning repeat visits.

Use the same travel documents consistently and check an emergency or non-ordinary passport with the Montenegrin mission before departure. This guide does not establish the rules for every travel-document category.

Confirm your stay is registered

Arrange registration with the local tourism office or police within 24 hours of arrival. Hotels and some holiday rentals handle this, but confirm it with your host. A booking alone is not proof that registration is complete.

If you stay in a private home or your accommodation does not register you, complete it yourself. Do not leave this until departure: failing to register can lead to penalties.

Check every border on your route

Montenegro is outside the Schengen area. Time there does not use your Schengen short-stay allowance, and Schengen visits do not use Montenegro’s allowance. Check both sets of entry rules if your trip combines them.

Get your passport stamped when entering and leaving Montenegro. Land crossings can close at short notice. If arriving on a private boat, use a designated port or contact the harbor master or police before entry.

Arrange a longer stay in advance

If your plans exceed the short-stay allowance, contact the Montenegrin mission before traveling. Ask which visa, residence permission or work authorization fits the actual purpose of your trip.

Stay registration is a local formality, not permission to exceed the tourist limit. Do not assume that completing it extends your stay or allows employment.
