Overview

Most first trips link three places: Montevideo for the old city, the port market and its museums; Colonia del Sacramento, about 2 h 45 min away by coach; and Punta del Este, about 2 hours by coach from Montevideo. Our 7-day route gives Montevideo two days, Colonia a long coach day, and the coast three days.

The climate is temperate, with four clear seasons and rain spread through the year. The south and east, where Montevideo and Punta del Este sit, average about 16 C. Summer is warm and suits the beaches; winter is cool, and southern right whales pass the Maldonado coast from August to November.
